Project Proposal

Animated Crane Assembly

Back to the Project list

I chose to do my project on the cantilever crane system I designed for my design one-class project. This particular system was to be able to pick up a max load of 850lbs including hoist with a workable reach of 20 ft and be able to rotate 115 degrees horizontally and also it should have the ability to rotate vertically so the tension bar could be tightened or loosened as required.

The boom height will be approximately 120 inches from ground level, while the top tension bar clamp will be 240 inches from the floor.

I designed all parts, with the exception of the hoist; this was supplied by the Chester Hoist Company. Only the weight of the hoist was used for the purpose of calculating the total load, no geometry was used. I designed the hoist and trolley you see in this project for demonstration purposes only, not as a functioning hoist.

My goal in this project will be to show the crane rotate from side to side in a horizontal direction, as well as in the vertical direction, I would also like to animate the hoist and crane and have it move along the beam.(This will be an option)

All parts were created in Solid Edge V11/12 brought into Inventor 7 for easy translation into 3D Max and 3D Viz.

Parts that will be moving:

Please refer to the material list for information on parts used and additional information on what parts will be in motion.

  1. Item 10: (Top swing plate) will rotate horizontally
  2. Item 20: (Bottom swing plate) will rotate horizontally
  3. Item 26: (W4 x 13 beam) Will move up and down slightly to simulate a load being applied. (Optional)
  4. Not shown in item list: Hoist and crane. I hope to be able to have the hoist and crane system move along the beam. (This will be optional; I may not do this, depending on time)
  5. Item 22: (W4 X 13 beam) will rotate horizontally.
  6. Item 17: Tension bar will rotate horizontally among with the W4 X 13 BEAM)
