I chose to create a 3-piston steam engine and then animate it. Steam engines are used for many things in life and they are a very practical and cheap source of producing power. Steam engines turn raw heat into mechanical work. It takes the potential energy from the steam and converts it into power. Steam engines can burn fuel very efficiently and produce very little amounts of pollution.

A Scottish inventor James Watt, invented the first real steam engine in 1769. Back then the steam engine was used for trains and pumps but now in our present day they can be used for anything. Steam engines could also be used to power cars and at one point in time it was tested but the engine would take to long to warm up and get to the working temperature.

Here is a basic idea of how my working model would work. I am only creating the actual engine components.

This model is made for a manifold to be hooked up to it through some holes in the base. Air is pumped into the manifold, which has three tubes that are screwed into the arms of the steam engine. The air goes through the intake holes and into the pistons causing them to move in and out. The pistons create pressure and move the crank or gear, which translates the power to whatever it is driving.

Here are the basic parts that are involved in producing this model:

This is the base of the steam engine and it holds all of the components together.

This is the centre piston that aims down to the left side because of the way the arm is shaped to fit all the pistons on the one pin.

T
his is used for the other 2 pistons by fitting on either side of the centre one.

This is piston head and it is used for all three pistons. It has 2 holes in the back of it, one for the intake and one for the exhaust.

This is what the steam engine is driving. It is a gear on the end of a shaft. It could run anything I just chose a gear to show how it works.

This is what holds all the pistons together and translates the power through a pin to the gear.

In addition there are the pins that will hold all of the components on to the base of this steam engine.
