Project Proposal
2-Cycle Lawn Mower Engine
Matthew Monid
The 6.5
horsepower lawnmower engine may seem like a complicated piece of machinery,
but in reality, and unlike a 4 stroke, there are only a few moving parts.
The main parts are the flywheel, the crankshaft, the connecting rod, and
the piston.
On the other hand,
even though there are only a few moving parts, there are still many parts
to the engine. There is the engine block, the muffler, the cylinder head,
the spark plug, coil, carburetor, and many nuts and bolts to hold everything
together. |

The model
of engine that will be drawn has an external fuel tank, and brush guards,
since this is the commercial model. The lawnmower itself is made for more
regular use than the normal mowers, so the deck is made of aluminum so it
is lighter, and easier to move around, the fuel tank is large so the user
does not have to fill the tank as often. A more powerful engine is used
so that it is possible to cut thick grass and through debris that is in
the path of the mower such as branches.
The engine will be drawn by making several sub assemblies, and bringing them together. The subassemblies will be the carburetor, the piston-connecting rod, crankshaft and flywheel, the block and heads, the casing on the top of the engine, The exact number
of parts cannot be determined at this time, since the motor has not been
disassembled as of yet. A good estimate of the number of parts is around
150, which includes small parts such as springs, washers, gaskets, and
others. |
