The project that I have chosen to do is a Can Opener. If not obvious, a can opener is a kitchen tool or a utensil designed to open all kinds of cans. I chose this particular project because I believe that almost every kid who has been asked to help their mom in the kitchen is fascinated by the mechanics of a can opener, the simplicity and yet so useful everyday tool. It works like "magic", or so I thought.

For the mechanics side of the project, the can opener consists of a few linked parts. When the rotator is turned, a gear and a can gripper rotate. When the two handles of the opener are squeezed and put closer together, a second angled gear (which is connected alongside with a thick blade) comes in contact with the first gear that is already rotating, resulting with the blade rotating proportional to the rotator. Finally, with the top part of an anonymous can put in between the blade and the can gripper, the can moves around as the rotator is turned. This method is repeated until the can is completely opened.

There are 16 total parts used in the can opener in which 15 are unique. They are: handle connector 1, handle connector 2, washer, screw, magnet, gear, rotator connector, can gripper, welded bolt, rotator, hex-washer, handle, blade and gear, connector bolt, and connector washer.
