Project Proposal

Turntable - Kevin Eng

Back to the Project list

The project that is being proposed is the design and animation of a turntable. A turntable or record player is an audio device that converts the grooves on a vinyl record into sound. The Technics SL-1200MK2, has been the industry standard for many years, used mainly by DJs around the world, and always in high demand by customers. The turntable is the standard for any DJ or nightclub owner. The turntable consists of 3 major parts: the base, the tonearm, and the platter assemblies. The 3 major parts will be modeled using Autodesk Inventor and then animated in 3D Studio Max. I want to show what parts a turntable consists of and how they assemble together. Near the end of the animation, I want to show the turntable in use with records, and what its capabilities are. Each major part has its own subassemblies of many tiny parts, but due to time constraints this will not be possible. Only 2 major parts will have an assembly and subassembly: the base and tonearm. The following is a description of the 3 major parts and their respective subassemblies.

Base

This part is the foundation of the entire turntable, it harnesses the platter, tone arm, the electromagnetic motor, and all the electronics necessary to operate the turntable. The base also contains the on/off switch, the pop up target light, variable pitch control, and the record speed buttons. The precision aluminum diecast base absorbs the vibrations from the music output with the heavy rubber material on the underside. Four large-size insulating feet also help absorb unwanted vibrations.

Platter

The turntable platter is what spins when the turntable is in operation. It has a magnet on the underside, which interfaces with the electromagnet motor, and gives the platter the smooth operation. The diecast platter is vibration damped with special fabricated rubber matting in the underside.

Tonearm

The tonearm consists of 5 parts: 1 tone arm, 2 gyroscope hinges, 1 stylus, and 1 balance weight. This is the part that makes all the grooves in vinyl records audible. The stylus will convert these grooves into vibrations that will travel through the tonearm and out to the speakers. The highly sensitive tonearm features bearings that are finished to a micro tolerance, and resulting in minimal friction to both horizontal and vertical movement.
