Base
The Base
is made of cast iron and is used to counterbalance the arms so they don't
move. There is a hole that has the base ball joint pressed into it.
Joints
All the parts,
except the base, are made out of stainless steel. The three joints are
identical and allow for three degrees of freedom: Pivot in the xy and
xz planes and rotation above the ball joints. The ball joints are held
together by friction with forces applied by the thumbscrews and the wing
nuts.
Shaft
The shaft
is connected to shaft socket ball joint in the centre and held in place
by the thumbscrews. The ends of the shaft are shaped into balls that become
the first parts of the two joint at the ends.
Clip Assembly
The clips
are connected to the joint via ball joint to clip connecter. The clips
are held in place by thumbscrews short. The clip assembly has on degree
of freedom, rotation.
