Module Objective The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of the components for a roof system. Roof terminology including roof shapes will be discussed.

Basic Types of Roofs

Generally roofs can be classified into 2 categories:
- flat roof
- pitched roof
- Shallow Pitch (less that 1:3)
- Normal Pitch (1:3 or greater)
The roof slope is a ratio of the rise to the run which can also be expressed as units.
Below is an example of an imperial and metric roof slope.
Roof types or shapes.
The most common roof types are as follows:
- Flat
- Shed
- Gable
- Hip
- Full Hip
- Dutch Hip
- Mansard
- Gambrel
- intersecting Gable or Hip

Two basic construction systems for roofs are:
Manufactured Pre-Assembled Roof Trusses
Roof Truss - Assembly
Assembly-line for manufactured pre-assembled roof truss. Mouse-over.
Roof Truss - Delivery
Manufactured roof trusses will be delivered tot he construction site as a package.
It is important to notice that in some instances a lead time is required for trusses to be manufactured and shipped to a site.

Manufactured pre-assembled roof truss are installed with the assistance of a portable crane.

Rafter Framed Roof
Roofs can be framed directly on site as opposed to using roof trusses.
Rafter framed roofs are not as popular as they were in the past.
Shape of Manufactured Trusses or Rafter Roofs
Before proceeding look at the following front elevations and decide if the roofs could be framed with:
- roof rafters framed on-site
- or manufactured pre-assembled trusses
Types of Roof Sheathing are as follows:
- waferboard
- OSB Board
- spruce sheathing
- lumber
Roof Sheathing
Waferboard roof sheathing installed on a truss roof.

Metal H Clips
Despite the type of roof sheathing the edges of the sheathing between the trusses or rafters must be supported. Plywood Clips.
Metal H Clips are used as edge support for the roof sheathing.

Despite the shape of the roof or the method of constructing the roof when designing the roof the snow load of the region or city where the building will be located is very important.
