Exercise 1 - Site Plans
The following exercise will demonstrate how to create a simple site plan.
If you wish to print out a 'printer friendly' version of this exercise, click on the EXERCISE1.PDF link then print.
1. Create the building structure. Assume the drawing scale is 1/8" = 1' (what's the scale factor?).
Start a new English Drawing and set up the drawing properly (Units, Limits, Zoom All, create Layers and load the linetypes, then set the SCALE for the linetypes: set the Annotation scale to the proper scale, and leave LTSCALE, MSLTSCALE, and PSLTSCALE all set to 1...)
Layer | Color | Linetype |
A01WALL | Yellow | Cont. |
A01WIN | Green | Cont. |
A01DOOR | Magenta | Cont. |
A01ROOF | Green | Hidden2 |
A01DIM | Red | Cont. |
A01TEXT | White | Cont. |
Draw the following structure:

Save the structure in a file called "exer1-floorplan-xxxxxxxx.dwg", where xxxxxxxx is your login name. Close the file.
2.Open a new english drawing, and set up the drawing properly. Assume the scale is 1/16" = 1' .
Create three layers:
Layer | Color | Linetype |
ASPPROP | Cyan | Phantom2 |
ASPTEXT | White | Cont. |
ASPDIM | Red | Cont. |
Draw the following property lines (use polar coordinates), then draw the north arrow, and add in the text (distances and bearings):

Save the drawing in a file called "exer1-siteplan-xxxxxxxx.dwg", where xxxxxxxx is your login name.
3. To complete the exercise, continue working with the "exer1-siteplan-xxxxxxxx.dwg".
Rotate the site plan, the text and the north arrow so that the lower property line (the 90' long one) is horizontal. This can be done using ROTATE Reference. Adjust the text so that it can be read from the bottom or the right of the drawing (you will have to rotate one line 180 degrees).
Insert the floorplan drawing you created in step 1. Check the layer list. Note that the layers in the old drawing have been inserted with the drawing.
Turn Layer A01DIM off. Rotate and adjust the floor plan block until it sits in the site as shown below:

Add the site dimensions on layer ASPDIM.
Save the file. The exercise is complete.
Note: The above site plan was drawn in decimal feet, and the floor plan in feet and inches (english units). Site plans in Canada are metric, and you normally will be working in millimetres when drawing site plans.
