OBJECTIVES

• Execute quality line work.
• Use proper drawing symbols and conventions

BACKGROUND

Notes and titles are an important part of architectural drawings. Lettering should complement a drawing - not distract or overpower. This exercise will practise basic lettering shapes and related conventions.

TIPS

These tips will help to improve your printing:

• use guidelines for all printing
• maintain a uniform point on your lead - or use a fine-tipped pen
• make vertical line strokes first
• place a piece of paper under your hand to protect your drawing
• if using pencil, clean the graphite off your drawing (either with a brush or by blowing it off)
• be critical about your lettering
• practice printing by lettering one or two 8-1/2 x 11 sheets each week.

TASKS

The following image contains general notes from an architectural drawings. Draw these notes in a 4-1/2" (120 mm) wide column on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet, using quality freehand architectural lettering.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• This is a freehand drawing course and consequently all lettering MUST be created using freehand drawing techniques. Drawings that incorporate ruled lettering (i.e. drawn with a stencil) will not be evaluated.
• Use appropriate line weight and line type conventions as discussed in class.
• Be sure to include your name and class code (e.g. P02) on your drawings.

The drawing will be collected at the end of the class.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

This exercise is primarily to PRACTISE drawing neat, consistent and straight line work. It will be evaluated for completeness only (i.e. Complete or Not Complete). However, your work should show some improvement from the first sketch to the last sketch.
