ASSIGNMENT 3:  Design Drawings for a Small Bungalow with a Truncated Hip Roof

OBJECTIVES

BACKGROUND

This assignment involves the design of a simple single-storey bungalow residence for an aging senior citizen, Bungalow Bill.

It is to be built on the property of his retired son, Paul Lennon.

Bill would not be comfortable moving in with his son's family and yet moving into an "old-age home" is not an option that anyone wishes to pursue.

Though he is over 80 years old, Bill is still quite capable of living independently. His lifestyle and consequently his needs are quite simple...

His programmatic requirements are as follows: 

• Transition space between outside/inside (entrance foyer) with coat storage. Front door is a single 3'-0" wide in-swinging door a sidelite is optional.
• Combined open-plan living / sleeping space to accommodate a single bed.
• The sleeping area should incorporate a 2'-0" deep clothes closet.
• The living / sleeping area should provide views out to the garden.
• A combined Kitchen will be complete with stove, sink, fridge, a countertop with a minimum 5'- 0" of length of clear work area, as well as lower and upper cabinet storage.
• The eating area will accommodate a table and chairs for 4 persons
• Bathroom containing a toilet, sink and vanity and a bathtub with a shower head and curtain.
• The primary form of the building is a 18' x 28' rectangle with a truncated hip roof.
• The gross floor area including exterior and interior walls will be 504 square feet.
•  The roof slopes will all be the same. There is to be a 12" roof overhang. The slope (A= 4:12, B= 6:12,C= 8:12, D=10:12) will be assigned to you in class.
• Note that exterior walls are 12" thick, the plumbing wall behind the toilet is 6-1/2" thick and all the other interior walls shall be  5-1/2" thick
• windows or doors can be placed at your discretion to suit your design...but the design must contain at least 1 6'-0" wide sliding glass door.

TASKS

The essence of architectural drafting is the representation of 3-dimensional objects (i.e. buildings) in a 2-dimensional medium (i.e. drawings). This exercise involves the study of a complex roof form, concepts of orthographic projection, true planes schematic design and the building of a simple massing model . 

PART A

Using professional freehand drawing techniques draw at a scale of 1/4"=1'-0", create a set of architectural drawings of your proposed design solution.

Your set will include the following drawings:

• a cover page with a 3-D image (isometric, axonometric or 2 point perspective) of the completed design
• the floor plan with the following: roof shown as a hidden line over @ 1/4"=1'-0"
• 4 elevations (N,S,E,W) 1/4"=1'-0"
• 2 true planes of the unique roof surfaces @ 1/4"=1'-0"
•  a building section @ 1/4"=1'-0"

PART B

Construct a 1/4"=1'-0" scale massing model of thin card or matte board in a neutral colour complete with bottom surface, neat edges, tight joints, closed corners and flat planes with ALL of the tape or glue concealed.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• One set of quality freehand 11" x 17"  architectural drawings complete with cover page and binding strip
• submit PHOTOCOPIES ONLY- originals will not be accepted!
• Massing model

Due Date:  the beginning of the first class in Week 7.
