• Execute quality line work and lettering.
• Properly use drawing symbols and conventions.
• Prepare sketches to specified scales.
• Prepare orthographic architectural drawings.
• Create sketch drawings using a variety of techniques.

BACKGROUND

Architectural elevations are a fundamental component of a set of architectural drawings. These elevations incorporate many graphic elements must be completed using standard drawing conventions. The drafting conventions and amount of detail will vary - depending on the scale of the drawing. This module introduced the graphic conventions for architectural elevations for a variety of scale.

FREEHAND GRAPHIC STANDARDS FOR DESIGN DRAWINGS
(Note: Graphic standards are different for architectural working drawing elevations)

Elevations show finish materials and the relationship of the project to the site.

• As a minimum, the main elevation and one side elevation should be drawn - ideally ALL elevations should be drawn
• The ground line should be drawn thick.
• Exterior finish materials should be drawn.
• Landscaping and other exterior features should be shown.
• Shades and shadows will enhance 3D characteristics of an elevation.
• Use line thickness to show depth - elements that are nearer are shown using heavier line weights - elements that are further are indicated using lighter lineweights.
• People and vehicles should be shown for scale and a sense of reality.
• Drawings should be titled and scaled. Ideally, the scale should be the same as the plan (s).
