ARCHITECTURAL DEPARTMENT POLICIES

The Sheridan College Architectural department strives to run itself in the same manner as a professional office.  The intent of professional office manner is to:

  • foster an inclusive environment that encourages participation and idea sharing
  • facilitate individual and team productivity
  • promote ethical and fair interaction between all office members.

Our office dictates that all members conduct themselves in accordance with the above stated intentions.  To ensure that this goal is met, please adhere to the following Architectural Department Policies.

  1. Mobile Devices
During class sessions, please silence all communication devices to prevent disruption of the class. If extenuating circumstances apply and you must be available to receive emergency communication, please excuse yourself from the class before answering the device. Class members who are found to be disruptive with their device may be asked to leave the class.

  2. Laptop Use:
    1. Students who do not bring a laptop to class may not be able to complete evaluations and may, as a result, be unable to receive credit or feedback.

    2. Class members who are involved in non-class mandated internet communication, gaming, video streaming, music, etc. rarely are able to be productive in either an individual or team context, and can be disruptive to the people around them who are participating in the class. For this reason, please do not engage in non-class mandated internet communication during classes. Faculty will identify non-productive or disruptive activities and class members may be asked to leave the class or close their laptops.
  3. Printing
As a program with strong graphic content and tight deadlines, we in the Architectural Technician / Technology Department often have legitimate needs to use the printers on short notice. However, printers operating in classrooms while classes are in session are disruptive to the participants of the class. For this reason, please plan your printing far enough in advance to use one of the CAD Lab printers or classroom printers when class is not in session. Print jobs sent to printers in classrooms that are in session may be cancelled or discarded, and entrance to classrooms to retrieve print jobs during class sessions may be denied.

  4. Food and Drink
CAD Labs contain delicate computer equipment that does not react well to spills, and class participants need to use desk space which is clean enough that it does not damage drawings, notes or books. To prevent spills from occurring, follow these rules:

    • No food allowed in the CAD Labs.
    • No drinks allowed in the CAD Labs with the exception of closed bottles.   Coffee cups, open cans or any other containers that can cause a spill are a hazard and are not allowed near the computers or equipment.
    • A table will be provided in each CAD room for students to leave their food and drinks while using the CAD Labs.
    • Students are not allowed to use the podiums or the projectors except during class activities and then only with the permission of the instructor.
    • Do not unplug any computers equipment.  Open network jacks or power is available on partitions above the table tops.
    • Respect other CAD Lab users.  Keep the music and sound levels low.

Class members with food or beverages will be asked to leave the labs. For further information on all CAD LAB policies, please see: CAD Lab Access Policy.

  5. Student Code of Conduct
The Student Code of Conduct, along with other related policies and procedures, is intended to foster a culture of respect and safety... All Sheridan students have the right to be treated in a manner which is respectful, honest, and free from discrimination or harassment on protected grounds. Sheridan students have the responsibility to treat other members of the Sheridan community in a manner which conforms to the Code of Conduct.” Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct Appendix for these and other behaviour-related policies deemed to be contrary:
    1. Acting in any bullying or intimidating manner to any other member of the Sheridan community (including other students and Sheridan employees)
    2. Damaging, or threatening to damage property not owned by the student;
    3. Displaying any writing, pictures or graphics, or using language or dangerous gestures, or engaging in behaviours, any of which ought reasonably to be known would be offensive to other members of the Sheridan community;
    4. Using recording devices in classrooms or on Sheridan premises, without the permission of Sheridan and/or those being recorded.

  6. Proper Citation of Sources
Ensure that you use proper processes when citing from your friends, your instructors, textbooks, manufacturer’s literature, online sources, image banks, etc. Refer to specific policies and procedures found on the Library Services website.

  7. Course Evaluation Practices
As a program with complex projects and tight deadlines, we in the Architecture Department want to encourage behaviours that will help students be successful in the workplace, and to ensure that students receive credit for their individual work.

    1. For submission of assignments and projects, the professor will specify, in writing, all due dates and special instructions for submissions.
    2. Unless otherwise noted by your instructor, assignments and exercises are due at the beginning (i.e. Within the first 10 minutes) of class in which the assignment/exercise is due.
    3. Overdue submissions: A deduction of 10% per day, or part thereof, applies for up to 4 calendar days (not business days). Submissions handed in on day 5 and later will recieve a 'zero' grade. At faculty discretion, feedback may be provided upon student request.
    4. iv. Evaluations identified as formative assignments or quizzes are required to be done within the stated time period as defined by the faculty member. Late submissions may not receive a grade and are excluded from the above 10% per day late penalty.
    5. It is the students' responsibility to electronically submit all late work as an indicator of completion and assessment of late penalty as applicable.
      1. Hard copies will be submitted to faculty mailboxes if requested.
      2. Electronic correspondence must originate from a Sheridan email account for tracking purposes.
    6. All assignments must be completed as individual efforts unless the professor states otherwise in writing. Individual assignments identified by faculty as containing collaborative effort contravene Sheridan’s Academic Integrity Policy and will be processed accordingly.
    7. Tests:
Tests must be written as scheduled by the professor. A makeup test will only be provided to students who have an acceptable explanation for their absence, normally including documentation such as a medical certificate, explaining their absence. Note that there may be limitations on timing for makeups, so the student must discuss these special situations with the professor as soon as possible.
    8. Evaluation Notes: In all courses unless specified otherwise:
Regardless of the final total mark, the students must achieve at least 50% average on the exam/quiz/test components and 50% average on the assignment/project components in order to receive a passing grade for this course.
    9. Note: Steps to appeal grades and evaluations are found on Sheridan’s Policy site, under Academic Policies and Procedures page, where links to Academic Appeal Procedures can be found.
  8. Adherence to Student Guidelines
The Architectural Department adheres to the Sheridan’s Student Code of Conduct. You should review your Student Guideline booklet, and ensure that you are familiar with Sheridan College policies.
